A SAD HISTORY
Auschwitz became one of the Nacis largest extermination and concentration camps during World War II. There were three in Auschwitz altogether. The first one was built in 1940 and was called Auschwitz I. In front of the entrance is the well-known inscription “Arbeit Macht Frei”. Due to insufficient capacity, the largest complex - Auschwitz-Birkenau - was built in Březince, located about 3 km from the village of Auschwitz. Prisoners were often sent from these two concentration camps to the nearby labour camp in Monowice - Auschwitz III. The whole complex served for mass destruction of Jews, Roma, Soviet prisoners, Slavs and other groups. Most were executed in gas chambers, shot or killed as a result of starvation and heavy labour. According to official figures, about 1.5 million of innocent people were murdered in Auschwitz. One of the most feared Naci that served in Auschwitz was Josef Mengele, who were performing human experiments.
Another sad landmark pointing out the tragic history is the well-known ramp where people were divided whether they would be imprisoned, or their lives would end up in the gas chamber.
