Krakow

According to legend, a knight Krak killed a dangerous dragon in the dragon pit on the Wawel hill, and since then the city has borne his name. Nowadays Krakow is considered the capital of Polish culture and is one of the important tourists, cultural and historical centres of Europe. During the World War II, Nazi Germany had a general government here. The effects of World War II can still be felt here, whether you visit the nearby memorial site of the Plaszow concentration camp or the factory of German industrialist Oscar Schindler, who helped Jews to get out of the camp. Nowadays the Old Town is full of great cafes, shops and restaurants mainly around the Main Market Square.

RECOMMENDED STOPS IN KRAKOW

On the Wawel hill, you can find the Royal Wawel Castle, which has served as the seat of kings since the 11th century. Later in the 14th century, the cathedral of Saint Stanislav and Saint Vaclav, which served as the coronation church and the place of the last rest of the Polish kings, were added to the complex. The Old Town, altogether with the Wawel hill, is registered among the cultural heritage of UNESCO. You can see here the remains of the ancient gothic fortification Barbakan and the Florian Gate, or you can visit many scenic streets such as Grodzka Street, Florian Street or Kanonicza Street, which is one of the most picturesque streets of Krakow. There are many churches in the city. One of the most beautiful is the Saint Andrew's Church that has been built in the romanesque and subsequently renovated in the baroque style. The interior is decorated with stucco decorations by Balthasar, Fontana and murals by Karel Dankwart together with a Baroque altar.

The main square Krakowsky Rynek is a landmark of the old town where besides the Marian Church, you can also find market Sukiennice which is one of the symbols of Krakow and full of shops and cafes. In the southern part of the Old Town you will find the traditional Jewish quarter of Kazimierz, where you can see many synagogues and Jewish cemeteries.

Today the factory of Oskar Schindler serves as a museum portraying the history of Krakow during the German occupation. The museum is very popular, and therefore we recommend you book in advance.

The memorial site of the Plaszow Concentration Camp is a park with a memorial symbolizing the people who walked through the concentration camp and is only a 12-minute drive from the Old Town. The concentration camp was built by the Nazis during World War II on top of two Jewish cemeteries in 1942 and was completely dismantled after World War II.

Approximately 30 minutes from Krakow is a stunning Wieliczka Salt Mine with intricate hand-carved corridors and tunnels that also feature unique sculptures, floors and chandeliers made of salt.
