Budapest is the capital of Hungary and the 9th largest city in the European Union. This UNESCO-listed city was established in 1873 by the unification of the three parts of Old Buda, Buda and Pest, which is divided by the Danube River. In the past, Budapest was ruled by a famous traditional monarch, which changed after it got conquered by the Turks. Thanks to this, Budapest has a unique history, which on the one hand meant the demolition or conversion of Christian churches into mosques, but also triggered the development of a considerable number of thermal baths, and many of the spas still work from these times. During the occupation of the Ottoman Empire, many nations such as Serbs, Armenians and Greeks settled in Buda and its surroundings, which made most of the native burghers leave mainly to the north. The great movement of nations caused the emergence of the Hungarian language, which took many words from others and applied them to their own, which created a unique language that is very inimitable and hard to understand.
RECOMMENDED STOPS IN BUDAPEST
The right bank of Buda is dominated by three major hills. Gellért with the Statue of Liberty, citadel and statue of Saint Gellert (Gerhard). On the second middle hill of Varhegy you will find the massive Buda Castle and the Royal Palace with a Hungarian art collection, surrounded by a stone wall with several other museums inside. A little further away, you will find the towers of the remarkable Fisherman's Bastion (Halaszbastya) and the Temple of Matthias tower. Right on the other side of the river there is another impressive building, the Hungarian Parliament (Orszaghaz). The well-known Budapest boulevard is called Andrassy Avenue, is very bussy most of the time. On the other hand, Vaci utca is another famous boulevard, that is not as crowded, and so it is more suitable for exploring its various shops and restaurants. You can notice the changing architectural styles of the 19th and 20th century. The gastronomic centre of Budapest is Hold Utca Food Market, which is divided into two large farmers markets, where you can always find fresh fruits, vegetables, but also meat, fish and Hungarian specialities. There are also many excellent bistros and kiosks, for example Stand 25 offers authentic Hungarian dishes by Mischelin's chef Tamas Szell. You can also visit the Heroes' Square, wich is one of the main squares of Budapest, dominated by a huge millennium monument with a total of 19 statues.
Budapest is a unique place in the world with more than a hundred thermal springs and wells. A total of 123 springs spew more than 70 million litres a day of water between 26-76 ° C. Try for example the popular Royal Spa, Raitzen, Rudas, Széchenyi and others, available to everyone for leisure or medical purposes. The healing properties of the springs are different. Therefore each spa focuses on different treatments.
