The convenient location of this commercial crossroads has been known since prehistoric times, but it was not until the 10th century that the first signs of Wroclaw appeared. Thanks to wealthy merchants, houses with beautiful architecture and beautiful river parks were built here, which can be found on one of the 12 islands created by the Oder River. Because the islands are connected by a total of 112 bridges and Wroclaw is known as Venice of Poland. World War II was a disaster for Wrocław and more than 70% of the city was destroyed, the reconstruction continued until the 1980s but was successful. Today, the city is a vibrant cultural city with several theatres and museums, with a renowned nightlife.
RECOMMENDED STOPS IN WROCLAW
Most of the major sites and monuments are concentrated in the city centre, including the renovated Old Market Square - Rynek, the second-largest market square in Poland, after the Krakow Market Square. The first local fortress was built around the 8th century on the island of Tumski, which then became the seat of the church. You can admire Wroclaw from the height of the nearby cathedral towers that are easily accessible by a lift. However, the most visited monument is the Racławice Panorama in the local rotunda. This enormous painting painted on the inside of the rotunda is 15 m high and astonishing 114 m long and depicts scenes from the most famous Polish rebellion known as the Battle of Racławice. If you are looking for a quiet area you can go and visit the Japanese gardens at Szczytnicki Park which is the oldest forest in the Wroclaw and can be found in the northern part of the city.
Wroclaw is also known for various music festivals that take place almost all year round. The first festival is already in February and is called Musica Polonica Nova, in May there is the Jazz on the Oder or in September you can go and visit the International Festival Wroclaw Cantas. In winter, amazing Christmas markets with a great atmosphere will get you to the right mood.
