Its history dates back to the Early Stone Age when the first settlement and the Franconian Royal Court were established around the river Main. Today's historical centre is located on the foundations of the old settlements. The centre of Frankfurt is the historic town hall of Römer and the medieval cathedral. However, the largest cathedral is the nearby Kaiserdom, also known as the St. Bartholomew's Cathedral, where the election of kings took place. If you like gourmet food, you should visit the Kleinmarkthalle, Frankfurt's marketplace, which is located on the way from the Kaiserdom to Frankfurt's ZOO. In the local, uniquely designed Zoo, you can explore up to 5,000 animals at the underground and above-ground expositions. The Palm Garden is a year-round green oasis with an exotic exhibition of up to 3000 plant species. After a day's walk, you can dine in the Main Tower, the highest restaurant in Frankfurt with a perfect view over the city, and if that is not enough, there is a lookout terrace at the top of this skyscraper as well.
