Walhalla Memorial is located in the small village of Donaustauf, approximately 15 km (30 minutes) from Regensburg. It is a magnificent building inspired by ancient buildings of similar importance, especially the Roman Pantheon and the Greek Acropolis. Great location and the landscape above the river Danube increases the impressive effect of the complex, which is well visible from a great distance. From the beginning Walhalla serves as a memorial to important personalities, which was built between 1830 - 1842 by King Louis I. Already in the year of opening there were placed 96 busts and 64 commemorative plaques.
Since 1847, the Bavarian government has the right to decide on placement in Walhalla. Martin Luther, Charles the Great, Maria Theresa, Immanuel Kant, Joseph Haydn have found their place here. After World War II, such as Richard Strauss, Albert Einstein, Johann Gregor Mendel. Since 2014, a total of 195 prominent personalities of German history were commemorated here.
