more information...

The first mention of Valtice is from the 12th century when the first group of settlers arrived here. For over 550 years (1391 - 1945) the town and its surroundings belonged to the Liechtenstein family, who transformed the town and its surroundings together with the nearby Lednice into a unique landscape complex today called the Lednice-Valtice area, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Valtice is one of the most famous and most visited wine destinations in Bohemia and among the large wineries, you will find here many smaller and more traditional ones as well. Every year the traditional Wine Exhibition takes place here and is considered as one of the most prestigious national wine competition, where more than 1,300 wines compete and only the best are selected.

RECOMMENDED STOPS IN VALTICE

Valtice is a great destination especially for wine and history lovers. You will find here a splendid Valtice Castle, which was rebuilt from the original Gothic castle built by the Bishops of Passau. The wealth of the family demonstrates the size and splendour of the decoration of the entire chateau complex. Nowadays you can visit representative rooms, baroque chapel, castle theatre or castle cellar from 1430, which is one of the largest and oldest original wine cellars in Bohemia. A great experience is a visit to Valtice Underground, an underground labyrinth of restored historic wine cellars from 1289 with a length of over 900m. The underground offers wine tastings with a unique atmosphere and themed events. The CHÂTEAU VALTICE winery area is located next door, where you can visit the Wine Barn which is a stylish wine shop where you can buy selected wines. Not far from Valtice on the hill Homole among the vineyards is the Colonnade Reistna built in the form of a Roman triumphal arch. On the roof of the arch is a viewing platform that offers a beautiful view of the surroundings.

more information...

Lednice estate was founded approximately in 1222 as a seat of the local landlord but thirty years later it became a property of the Liechtenstein family who owned it for almost 700 years until 1945. The town that was founded around the estate lies in the fertile wine region Pálava and you can taste wine from local winemakers all year round. In the city you will find a beautiful neo-Gothic chateau surrounded by one of Europe's largest parks that span across almost 200 ha and offers many beautiful sights.

RECOMMENDED STOP IN THE LEDNICE

Among many of the wine cellars in this region, you can find beautiful Chateau Lednice that originally served as a water fortress but was rebuild in 1575 to a chateau to serve as a place of summer festivities. This gave rise to a sumptuous representative summer residence, with rich interiors, in the spirit of English Gothic, that were used as a meeting ground of the European nobilities. During the reconstruction of the chateau a large 92-meter-long, 10-meter-high, cast-iron Palm Greenhouse was built, where nowadays, you can find 250 species of tropical and subtropical plants. The main attraction of this Palm Greenhouse is the palm-like cycad Encephalartos altensteinii whose age is estimated to be between 300 and 500 years! If you have enough time, you should definitely walk through the Castle Park and visit one of the many buildings that are scattered around the grounds.

Another great landmark of this area is the Moorish Waterworks, that is located not far from Lednice Castle and you will find it by the river, on the way to the Minaret. In the past, it served as a steam bath, park irrigation system, and the turbine also generated electricity for the chateau and farm buildings. Today, its technology is only used to irrigate park areas and you can find there an information center and stylish café in designed in oriental style. From there you can either walk, or you can get a romantic carriage ride to Januv Castle , that was built near the hunting field as a gathering place of the nobles before the hunt. After the hunt, there were rich feasts and the “King of the Hunt” was proclaimed. Or you can go visit the 62-meter-high Lednice Minaret, the oldest preserved lookout tower in Bohemia, and also the tallest building of this type outside Islamic countries. The reason for its origin is unknown, according to legend, it was in protest of Alois Lichtenstein against the church. Along the way you will come across a building resembling a bridge. However, it is an Aquaduct, built in the Roman style, which was part of the irrigation system of the park. It also served as an artificial waterfall, where the remaining water at the end of the trough fell freely into the adjacent pond.

OPENING HOURS

The chateau area is open all year round free from 7:00 to 22:00 and the chateau itself is open all year round as well and provides several guided tours. Different opening hours apply during different seasons and some public holidays! When planning your trip we recommend that you check the official website of the operator.

more information...

Prague, also known as the “head of the kingdom” or “the mother of cities”, is the 5th most visited city in Europe. In 2016 it became the 6th best tourist destination in the world according to TripAdvisor.

The capital and largest city of the Czech Republic was founded according to legend on the Vltava River in the 8th century. However, the first archaeological findings indicate the first settlement around 200 BC, later known as the city of Casurgis. The greatest boom of Prague occurred during the reign of the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles IV, who made Prague an imperial residence and wanted to make it the capital of the empire. Prague also played an important role in the years to come, when it gradually outlasted the First and Second World War and subsequently the Soviet occupation.

RECOMMENDED STOPS IN PRAGUE:

Prague Castle is the largest ancient castle in the world, founded in the 9th century. In one of its four courtyards you will find the Saint Vitus Cathedral. The saint Vitus Cathedral served as a ceremonial place for coronation of Czech kings in the past, and also as a place of their last rest. Alongside the remains of Czech monarchs are deposited the Crown Jewels. Not far from the cathedral is the famous Golden Lane with houses from the 16th century, now serving as a gallery or shops. The castle also includes several important buildings, such as the Prague Castle Riding School, Ball Room of  Prague Castle and several magnificent gardens.

Not far from the Prague Castle you can visit the Strahov Monastery (Mons Sion) with its famous library and picture gallery and a little further from there, you can ascend to the Petřín Lookout Tower, the little sister of the Eifel Tower, which offers a much nicer view.

Along the way to the Old Town Square, where you will find the Old Town Hall and the popular Prague Astronomical Clock from the 13th century, you will surely walk across the  old Charles Bridge that connects the Old Town and New Town, The historically significant part of the New Town is Josefov district also known as a Prague Jewish Town, where you will be astonished by the beautiful architecture of the original Town Hall and 6 Synagogues.

A very beautiful but neglected sight is Vysehrad, a historic hillfort with a castle in Prague, located on a rock on the right bank of the Vltava River. It is dominated by the Basilica of St. Peter and Paul and from where is beautiful view over the Prague.

Prague Zoo and Botanical Garden

It is a modern garden that shows animals in conditions that are as close as possible to their natural environment. It has contributed to the rescue of many endangered animal species and has made it the 5th best garden in the world! Right next to the Zoo is the Botanical Garden, which presents interesting exhibits on 52 hectares. The most famous exposition is the greenhouse "Fata Morgana".

TIP: For comfortable exploration of Prague, you can rent one of our cars with a chauffeur for only a few hours! You will manage to see more sights, which is definitely a plus, if you are time constrained.
